Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the capital both of the UAE and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, one of the seven emirates which form the UAE. While being one of the most modern cities of the world, Abu Dhabi has also retained a typical Arab feel, not being as hectic and crowded as its big brother, Dubai. It is ideal for those who are looking for a somewhat quieter stay. Having started out as just a tiny fishing village 50 years ago, Abu Dhabi has since rapidly evolved into a world-class metropolis. The US news network CNN has confirmed Abu Dhabi to be the richest city per capita in the world. The city’s 420 000 inhabitants command an average wealth of 15 million Euro per inhabitant. Abu Dhabi does not have a common architectural style to it but instead contains influences from all kind of styles – modern as well as older ones. The skyscrapers do, however, have a dominant place in the central city. Famous skyscrapers include, e.g. the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority Tower, the National Bank of Abu Dhabi, and the Hilton Tower.

Despite being one of the most modern cities in the world, Abu Dhabi has a fascinating cultural and historical heritage. The city, unfortunately, does not offer a large amount of historical or cultural landmarks, but the ones there are offer something marvellous! The Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi is the world’s third largest. Built entirely in pure white marble, it also contains the world’s largest hand-woven carpet. In order to gain entry to this impressive building, you must wear modest and non-revealing attire. A visit to the Fortress of Al Maqtaa is a must! This 200-year-old fortress was used as a fortification against foreign invaders. The fortress has undergone a number of renovations during its lifetime and is an important landmark in the history of Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi offers never-ending opportunities for shopping in its large malls, such as Marina Mall and the Abu Dhabi Mall, but also in the local traditional souks. The nightlife is often concentrated in the hotel bars.

Public Beaches

In Abu Dhabi, you will find several beaches which are open to the public, and here we list 3 of these.

Corniche Beach is in the heart of the city! It is a meeting ground with activities for the whole family, as well as being popular for walking and jogging. You have easy access to this beach from the boardwalk starting at Marina Mall. This beach has an entry fee.

Enjoy the pristine white sands of Yas Beach on the island of Yas, which is an entirely artificial island. As an appreciated newcomer among the beaches of the city, Yas Beach is great for all of the versatile activities, and is a very appreciated newcomer! You have a selection of private cabanas, an infinity pool as well as bars and restaurants. This beach has an entry fee.

Saadiyat Beach is located a bit secluded on Saadiyat Island, and offers an amazing beach and wonderful water. This untouched white sandy beach which stretches along the coastline has retained a reputation as the most appreciated beach in the UAE. A wooden dock has been constructed in order to provide access to it, and as a result native wild animals like the Hawksbill Turtle can be found on the beach. This beach has an entry fee.

Beach Clubs

Just like Dubai, Abu Dhabi has a selection of beach clubs, which offer a way for both tourists and citizens to get away from the city! For a fee, you can enjoy sunlight and swimming in a luxurious fashion! This is ideal for those who stay at hotels lacking beaches of their own.

Saadiyat Beach Club – also called “The King of Beach Clubs” – is a luxurious complex which caters the pickiest beach guests of the city. A small paradise, with a pleasant atmosphere, excellent food and the opportunity of long walks on the beautiful Saadiyat beach. Out of the way as well as glamorous, it will for sure make you feel like a VIP during your stay!

Nation Riviera Beach Club. The main attraction of this beach club is a 33m temperature-regulated pool, complete with a bar surrounded by 12 cabanas. At one end, you will find a jacuzzi, next to a playground where your kids can run around while you enjoy a relaxing day. Nannies are also available on request for a fee – make sure to make your reservation 24 hours in advance. The beach club restaurant, Cabana Bar & Grill, serves delicious, fresh food which is perfect for a fantastic seaside lunch.

Tourism Tax

All of the hotels of Abu Dhabi are obliged to charge a tourism tax. This tax is to be paid directly to the hotel by the guests during their stay.

Alcohol

Alcohol is forbidden in the Islamic religion. Drinks with alcoholic content cannot be purchased in the average store in the UAE. However, alcohol is served in restaurants and bars in most hotels. It is allowed to drink alcohol that you have brought in your hotel room. A person who is 18 years old or above may bring up to 4 litres of alcoholic drinks to the UAE. Note that the UAE enforces strict regulations on alcohol. The age limit for the purchase of alcoholic drinks in restaurants and bars is 21 years old. People under the age of 21 may be denied entry to bars. Sometimes short bans (often shorter than 24 hours) on any sale of alcohol may occur.

Deposit

Some hotels ask for a deposit on arrival. This deposit can be paid with a credit card or cash (Dirham or Euro). The deposit is returned to you when checking out and can be used e.g. to pay for example consumption at the hotel
